JLPT N5 Reading Practice Stories

These short stories are designed to help you practice reading at the JLPT N5 level.

When I was studying, I found plenty of grammar explanations and vocabulary lists, but it was hard to find reading material at the right level. That's why I created this collection.

The stories were written with the help of AI to match N5 grammar and vocabulary (at least according to the AI). To make sure they're usable, I also asked a native Japanese speaker to review them.

How to Use These Stories

To get the most out of your reading practice, try using the buttons at the top of the page:

• Furigana (pronunciation guides)

  • Click “Hide furigana” if you want to challenge yourself to read kanji without help.
  • Click “Show furigana” to display readings above the kanji when you need extra support.

• English translation

  • Click “Show translation” to see the English meaning and check your understanding.
  • Click “Hide translation” to focus only on the Japanese text.
