Which reading to use?
You’ll meet 月 in four very common ways. Use this rule of thumb:
つき — the moon itself / standalone “moon”
例：月がきれい (“The moon is beautiful.”)
がつ — calendar months (after a number)
例：一月・二月・三月（いちがつ・にがつ・さんがつ）
げつ — fixed compounds (time words / weekday)
例：今月・来月・先月・月曜日（こんげつ・らいげつ・せんげつ・げつようび）
かげつ — duration in months (“for X months”)
例：一か月・二か月（いっかげつ・にかげつ）

Calendar months → がつ
Numbers + 月 = がつ.
