For full details and edge cases, please consult your textbook or a trusted dictionary.
Which reading to use?
You’ll meet 月 in four very common ways. Use this rule of thumb:
つき — the moon itself / standalone “moon”
例:月がきれい (“The moon is beautiful.”)
がつ — calendar months (after a number)
げつ — fixed compounds (time words / weekday)
かげつ — duration in months (“for X months”)
Core patterns
Calendar months → がつ
Numbers +
Time words / weekday → げつ
Fixed compounds with a time meaning use
Duration (“for X months”) →
Use かげつ to show how long something lasts.
Standalone “moon” → つき
- 月(つき) — “the moon”
Common traps to watch
- Don’t mix up month names (がつ) with month lengths (かげつ).
Quick checklist before you answer
- After a number? → probably がつ
- Talking about this/next/last month or Monday? → げつ
- Talking about a duration (“for X months”)? →
- Is it just the moon as a noun? → つき
